Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO (August 6, 1828 – December 12, 1917) was the founder of osteopathy and osteopathic medicine. He was also a physician and surgeon, author, inventor and Kansas territorial and state legislator.

Osteopathy refers to the system of complementary medicine that involves the treatment of a wide variety of musculoskeletal problems. It also plays an important role in the management of a number of other conditions. The most common complaints, for which patients consult Osteopathic Manual Practitioners, include:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches
  • Pains in peripheral joints such as shoulders, knees and ankles, tendinitis and muscle strains
  • Work-related and repetitive strain injuries
  • Sports-related injuries

However, Osteopathy can also play a significant role in pain management or when used in conjunction with medical treatment.

Many mothers-to-be find Osteopathic treatment very beneficial both to reduce back pain during pregnancy and also to help in preparing the body for birth. In addition, there is a wide variety of gentle and non-manipulative techniques that can be used on infants and small children.

Osteopathic Manual Therapist (DOMP)

There are a number of Osteopathic Manual Therapists, who have earned Diploma in Osteopathy Manual Practitioner (DOMP), in Rachel’s Homeopathy & Holistic Health. Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists and Physiotherapists in Ontario fall under the regulated health professions, while Osteopathic Manual Therapists do not, meaning they are unregulated. Osteopathic Manual Therapy is not considered to be an Acupuncture Specialty, Massage Therapy, Physiotherapy or Chiropractic Specialty.

Osteopathic treatment is covered by many private insurance plans. Please check with yours to see what your coverage is, as individual plans vary. It is important to note that osteopathy is not a service that can be directly billed to insurance companies. You will be given an invoice with my billing numbers on it and you will need to submit this invoice (and a doctor’s referral, if required – again, please check), to receive the reimbursement for the cost.

When You Need to See an Osteopathic Manual Therapist

There are a number of activities that have the potential to cause physical stress and strain, which can restrict the biomechanical system of the body. If it occurs, it can affect our body in multiple ways including the hindering of movement, pain and other symptoms that are typically seen as unrelated. Regardless of whether you lead an active lifestyle, remain mostly sedentary, are battling an illness or disease, or are recovering from surgery, osteopathy can help in reducing pain and other symptoms while returning your body back to its original rhythm through the correction or compression, restrictions and imbalances.
